How To Explore Barcelona When It Rains | Top Indoor & Cultural Spots

Barcelona is famous for its sunny blue skies and vibrant street life, but when the rain falls – … like today – the city reveals a different kind of magic. Don’t let a little rain stop your adventure cuz there are endless ways to explore a different side of the city instead of finishing off your Netflix list.

To make your exploring easier, I linked each place name in this guide directly to its location on Google Maps, so just click on the name, and you can save, plan, or navigate. – … yeah, I know… you’re welcome!

So, anyway… here’s a list of hidden gems in Barcelona that give you a different, more local side of the city – perfect for a rainy day.

Explore Barcelona’s Museums & Cultural spots

A lot of museums are free on the first Sunday of each month – a great chance to explore art, history, science, and design if you are on a budget – …or just love a good deal, ha! … booking is required tho!

MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) – Catalan art through centuries, and the building itself is stunning. And if you catch a little break in the rain, then the outside terrace has a great viewpoint over the city.

L’Aquàrium de Barcelona – Located in Port Vell, this aquarium features an 80-meter underwater tunnel with sharks, rays, and sea turtles.

Museu Picasso – One of the world’s best collections of Picasso’s early works

Fundació Joan Miró – Colorful, inspiring, a must for modern art lovers.

Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch – An interactive museum telling the story of sport and the Olympic movement from ancient times to today.

CosmoCaixa Science Museum – Interactive fun with mini Amazon rainforest, experiments, planetarium, and more.

Museu de Cera – Recently renovated wax museum featuring famous figures, pop culture icons, and sci-fi characters.

Iconic Architecture – but indoors this time…

La Sagrada Família – The stained glass may glow differently on cloudy days, but the interior is still absolutely unmissable.

Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Casa Vicens & Palau Güell – Gaudí’s buildings are perfect for rainy-day exploration, complete with excellent audio guides and dreamlike spaces.

Churros, Hot Chocolate and a good book

Nothing cures rainy-day blues like hot chocolate and churros, no? Yes.

Xurreria Laietana – A classic spot serving churros and hot chocolate since 1962.

La Pallaresa Xocolateria Xurreria – My favorite near Plaça de Sant Jaume. Founded in 1947, known for its thick, hot chocolate, this family-run shop has preserved its traditional charm for decades.

Granja M. Viader – Founded in 1870, this historic café is famous for its rich hot chocolate, creamy churros, and traditional Catalan treats.

Bar Marsella – Open since 1820, it’s one of Barcelona’s oldest bars. Stepping inside feels like time travel, with its 19th-century décor and bohemian atmosphere. The bar became a refuge for Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Ernest Hemingway, who are all said to have sipped a bit of absinthe there…

La Central del Raval – A must-visit for book lovers, this multi-level bookstore offers everything from art and literature to design and travel. Its quiet reading corners and café bar make it ideal for a quiet afternoon.

Biblioteca de Catalunya – This grand historic library is perfect for those looking for a peaceful indoor retreat.

Indoor Fun, Arcades & Entertainment

For some indoor adventures, Barcelona offers arcades, trampolines, and adrenaline-filled experiences:

NEXT LEVEL Arcade Bar – Retro ’80s –’90s arcade with the classics like Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and more.

Ilusiona – arcade, bowling, bar, cinema? Yes, and all in one place.

JumpYard Barcelona – Trampoline park for high-energy indoor fun.

The Rage Room Barcelona – Smash plates and objects for a surprisingly satisfying rainy-day release – … and definitely something you can’t do every day at home.

Escape Rooms – Try Magic Escape or Picadero Motel for immersive puzzle fun.

Shopping Strolls

  • Gran Via 2, Diagonal Mar Shopping Centre, Maremagnum, and Las Arenas – Large malls with shopping, dining, cinema, and entertainment.

  1. A truly beautiful city. I had an amazing time visiting with my daughter. One of the many highlights was visiting the Palau de la Música, when we took a guided tour. We subsequently became aware of the acute housing crisis that exists for the citizens of Barcelona. I hope most sincerely that a solution can be found to overcome the problems.

Thank you for calling us out of our homes and Netflix addictions to explore the wonder of Barcelona! You’ve laid out a beautiful map of discoveries for us. All I need now is a ticket from Pittsburgh, PA to Spain!

  5. Life for me HAS BEEN a crystal stair. During my travels, I have seen a “humongous ” number of interesting and beautiful objects and edifices. No, I have yet to visit Spain, but who knows…it still might happen. Thanks for visiting my blogs which highlights my many missionary tours to under-privileged countries.

Just exquisite architecture to highlight – thank you so much for the photos. I read once Goethe said “Architecture is frozen music” & these are beautiful symphonies to the eye!
