If you’ve been to any major city, from Chicago to Paris, you’ve probably already seen those double-decker sightseeing buses driving past famous landmarks – … they are available here in Barcelona too, with the promise of an easy way to explore the city. But with tickets costing around €30 or more, you may be wondering whether these hop-on hop-off buses are actually worth the money!?
The short answer is yes – for many visitors. However, they’re not the best choice for everyone. So if you’re visiting Barcelona for a day or staying for a week, this guide will help you decide if a hop-on hop-off bus is the right option for your trip.

What Is the Barcelona Hop-On Hop-Off Bus?
Barcelona has two official sightseeing bus companies:
Both operate open-top double-decker buses that travel around the city’s most popular attractions. With a single ticket, you can hop on and off as many times as you like during the validity of your pass. Every bus also includes multilingual audio commentary about Barcelona’s history, architecture, and culture while travelling between attractions.
For most travellers, there’s very little difference between the two companies. Both cover Barcelona’s main attractions, operate modern buses with an audioguide for similar prices.
So, the best choice often depends on which route starts closest to your hotel or which company has the better online deal when you’re booking.
Prices can change slightly each year, but you can generally expect to pay:
- 24-hour ticket: around €33
- 48-hour ticket: around €44
Children and families often qualify for discounted tickets, and booking online may save you a few euros.

Pros of the Barcelona Hop-On Hop-Off Bus
Easy to Use
You don’t need to study metro maps or worry about changing lines. Simply board the bus and hop off whenever you want to explore.
Great Overview of the City
If it’s your first day in Barcelona, the bus gives you an excellent introduction to the city’s layout and major landmarks.
Many visitors ride the full route first before deciding which attractions they’d like to revisit.
Incredible Views
The open-top deck offers fantastic views of Barcelona’s famous streets and architecture. It’s also one of the best ways to take photos without worrying about traffic.
Informative Audio Guide
Instead of simply travelling from one destination to another, you’ll learn about Gaudí’s architecture, Barcelona’s history, and many interesting facts along the way.
Cons of the Barcelona Hop-On Hop-Off Bus
Traffic Delays
Unlike the metro, the buses share the road with regular traffic. During summer or busy weekends, journeys can take longer. Barcelona has one of Europe’s best public transport systems, and the metro can often get you between attractions much faster than the sightseeing buses, especially during rush hour.

More Expensive Than Public Transport
While convenient, the bus costs much more than a metro pass. If your goal is simply getting from one attraction to another, the metro is the better option. It’s quicker, cheaper, and avoids traffic. Many visitors choose the best of both worlds: they use the sightseeing bus on their first day, then switch to the metro for the rest of their trip.
Can Be Crowded
During peak tourist season, you may have to wait for the next bus if seats are full.

Suggested One-Day Hop-On Hop-Off Itinerary
If you’re visiting Barcelona for just one day, this itinerary lets you see many of the city’s highlights while making the most of your hop-on hop-off bus ticket.
9:00 AM – Sagrada Família
Start your day at Barcelona’s most famous attraction. Spend some time exploring Antoni Gaudí’s breathtaking basilica. Remember, if you want to go inside, you need to book ONLINE and IN ADVANCE – they often sell out days or even weeks ahead, especially during the high season.
Allow at least an hour if you go in
11:30 AM – Park Güell
Hop back on the bus and head to Park Güell, where colourful mosaics and panoramic city views await.
Entry requires a timed ticket, so it’s worth booking ahead if you want to go inside.
1:30 PM – Passeig de Gràcia
Ride the bus to Passeig de Gràcia, one of Barcelona’s most elegant streets.
Enjoy lunch before visiting two more Gaudí masterpieces: Casa Batlló and La Pedrera – …even if you don’t go inside, both buildings are worth seeing from the outside.
3:30 PM – Plaça de Catalunya & Gothic Quarter
Get off at Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona’s central square, and take a walk into the nearby Gothic Quarter. This is one of the city’s most atmospheric neighborhoods and a perfect place to experience Barcelona beyond its famous landmarks… – narrow medieval streets, hidden squares, local shops, and landmarks such as Barcelona Cathedral and Pont del Bisbe.
5 PM – Montjuïc
Continue to Montjuïc, a hill with beautiful gardens, museums, the Olympic Stadium, and some of the best viewpoints in Barcelona.
If you have time, take the cable car to the Montjuïc Castle or visit Mirador de l’Alcalde for spectacular views over the city and harbour.
7:00 PM – Barceloneta Beach
Finish your day with a beach stroll along Barceloneta before having dinner at one of the many seaside restaurants.

_______________
Verdict: so, is it worth it?
*drumroll*
… yes – it usually is.
If you’re only in Barcelona for a day or two, the hop-on hop-off bus offers a convenient, stress-free way to see the city’s biggest attractions without worrying about maps or public transport. The combination of transportation, sightseeing, and informative commentary makes it much more than just a bus ride.
If you’re staying longer, travelling on a tighter budget, or enjoy using public transport, Barcelona’s excellent metro system will probably offer better value.
Ultimately, the hop-on hop-off bus is best viewed as a sightseeing experience rather than just simply a way to get around – …that’s exactly what makes it worth the price.
Aaaanyways,
See you at the next one,
Noémi

Never like these gimmicks, walking is best and if tired there is the regular bus or metro. My five cents worth ::)
Very good information. Thank you!
I find these buses useful if you’ve never before visited
Fabulous guide. I think the hop and off is worth it but is better if you have more time, as you can get an overview of everything, and then maybe get adventurous and use the metro and/or walk 🙂
It really is a great way to get around Barcelona.
I have been on the Barcelona hop on hop off bus. I can recommend it. I wasn’t able to walk any distances because of an ankle injury and it enabled me to see the sights, experience the feeling of the place and enjoy the unique presentation of the streets.
Wow, what a comprehensive review. We hope to go to Spain in the fall of 2027 and will use this. Much thanks.
From my experience, these buses are a great option, especially for people who can’t walk long distances. You can enjoy beautiful views of the city and easily get to many of the main attractions. We explored Barcelona mostly on foot because we love wandering through the neighborhoods, and we found it very walkable. But I think the hop-on hop-off bus is an excellent alternative depending on travel style. 😊
