How To Make Tinto de Verano: Spain’s Favourite Summer Drink

It’s a heatwave all over Europe. In Spain? Just another regular summer. So do what locals do: find a shadowy terrace, enjoy a siesta, and order a tinto de verano. While most visitors think of sangria as Spain’s signature summer drink, locals are much more likely to reach for this refreshing red wine cocktail instead.

What Is Tinto de Verano?

Tinto de verano literally translates to “summer red wine.” It’s a classic Spanish drink made by mixing young red wine and lemon soda over ice, usually finished with a slice of lemon.

… y ya está! That’s it.

Sangria, on the other hand, is more fancy. It typically includes chopped fruit, orange juice, wine, brandy or another spirit, and sometimes sugar or spices. It’s prepared in large pitchers and served at parties or in restaurants catering to tourists.

The Classic Tinto de Verano Recipe

  • 1 part red wine
  • 1 part lemon soda – La Casera is the local gem, but Fanta Lemon or any sparkling lemonade will do
  • Plenty of ice
  • A slice of lemon

Bars and households all have their own little variations.
Some people prefer sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon instead of soda for a drier version. Others put a generous splash of sweet vermouth for an extra kick and sweetness – which happens to be my favourite.

If you’re in Spain this summer – or the thermometer is pushing past 40°C where you live – skip the fancy cocktails and make yourself a tinto de verano. It’s easy, crisp, genuinely local, and exactly what a hot summer day screams for…

….Sometimes the best summer traditions are also the simplest.

Also, don’t forget these wise words that have once been spoken:

Aaanyways…

See you at the next one,

Noémi
